Electric Bike Buying Guide

Three things decide whether you end up liking an electric bike: the motor, the battery, and whether the frame puts you in a position you can stand for an hour. Everything else on the spec sheet is detail. Get those three right for the riding you actually do and the bike will be fine. Get them wrong and no amount of extra features will save it.

This guide walks through what each of those parts does, what the numbers mean, and what you should reasonably expect to get for your money in Canada. If you already know what you want, the Blackrock X1 and its full specifications are published in the open.

The short version

  • Motor: 500 watts is the legal ceiling for a standard e-bike almost everywhere in Canada. Rear hub motors are simpler and cheaper to fix. Mid-drive motors climb better and cost more.
  • Battery: ignore volts and amp-hours on their own. Multiply them. Watt-hours is the number that tells you how far you can go.
  • Frame: step-through if you have any hip or knee trouble, folding if you need to store or transport it, fat tire if you ride on anything softer than pavement.
  • Brakes: disc brakes, front and rear. An e-bike is heavy and fast enough that rim brakes are not enough.
  • Parts: ask before you buy whether you can get a battery, a charger, a controller and a display in two years. This is the question most buyers forget and most regret.

Motors: where the power comes from

Hub motor or mid-drive

A hub motor sits inside the wheel, usually the rear one, and pushes the bike along directly. It is quiet, it is mechanically simple, it does not wear out your chain, and if it fails you replace a wheel. Most e-bikes sold in Canada under about $3,000 use a rear hub motor.

A mid-drive motor sits at the pedals and drives the chain, so it uses your gears. That makes it much better on long steep climbs, because the motor can drop into a low gear the same way you do. It also costs more, chews through chains and cassettes faster, and is more expensive to repair.

For flat and rolling ground, errands, trails and general riding, a rear hub motor is the sensible choice. If you live somewhere genuinely mountainous and you climb every day, a mid-drive earns its price.

What the wattage number means

Watts describe how much power the motor draws on a continuous basis. In Canada, 500 watts is the number that matters, because that is the limit for a standard e-bike in every province that has set one. A bike advertised as 1,000 W or 1,500 W is not a bicycle in the eyes of most provincial law, and riding one on a public road can put you in the same category as an unregistered motor vehicle. Watch for the difference between nominal and peak watts. Nominal is what the motor sustains. Peak is what it will briefly draw when you pull away from a stop. A seller advertising "500 W (1,000 W peak)" is describing a 500 W motor. A seller advertising "1,000 W" with the nominal figure buried in the fine print is hoping you will not look.

Torque matters more than watts on hills

Torque, measured in newton metres, is the twisting force the motor makes. It is what you feel when you push off from a stop sign or start up a grade. Two 500 W motors can feel completely different if one makes 45 Nm and the other makes 80 Nm. If a seller publishes torque, that tells you something real. If they publish only watts, they are telling you the least useful of the two numbers.

Throttle or pedal assist

Most Canadian e-bikes give you both. Pedal assist adds motor power while you pedal, in steps you select. A throttle moves the bike without pedalling, which is genuinely useful for pulling into traffic, starting on a hill with a load, or getting home when your legs are finished.

Underneath pedal assist there are two kinds of sensor. A cadence sensor notices that the pedals are turning and switches the motor on at the level you picked. It is simple and reliable, and the power arrives in a slight surge. A torque sensor measures how hard you are actually pushing and scales the motor to match, which feels more like a strong pair of legs than a motor. Torque sensors cost more and are usually found further up the price ladder.

Batteries: the number that tells you the range

Battery listings usually show two numbers, like 48 V 15 Ah or 36 V 20 Ah. Neither one on its own tells you anything. Multiply them:

volts × amp-hours = watt-hours

A 48 V 15 Ah pack holds 720 watt-hours. A 36 V 20 Ah pack also holds 720 watt-hours. They store the same amount of energy and, all else being equal, will take you about the same distance. Watt-hours is how you compare two bikes honestly, and it is the number many sellers quietly leave out.

How far those watt-hours take you depends on your weight, the temperature, the hills, and how much assist you use. That is covered properly in how far an e-bike can actually go, and the care and lifespan side is in the e-bike battery guide.

One practical point at the buying stage: find out whether the battery comes off the frame. A removable pack means you can carry it indoors to charge, which in a Canadian winter is not a luxury.

Frame styles and which one suits you

Style Best for Trade-off
Step-through Anyone with a sore hip, knee or back. Getting on and off without swinging a leg over a loaded rear rack. Slightly less stiff than a high-bar frame under heavy loads.
Folding Apartments, RVs, boats, car trunks, and anyone short on storage space. Smaller wheels ride firmer over potholes. The hinge needs checking.
Fat tire Snow, sand, gravel, farm lanes, and rough pavement. Comfort without suspension. Heavier, and a little more effort to push on smooth roads. See fat tire vs regular.
Commuter or hybrid Paved paths and city streets. Lightest and most efficient of the group. Unhappy on soft or broken surfaces.
Cargo Groceries, tools, kids, deliveries. Long, heavy, and awkward to store.

Wheel size follows from the style. A 26 or 27.5 inch wheel rolls over bumps more easily. A 20 inch wheel keeps the bike short, lowers the standover height, and makes a fat tire bike manageable for shorter riders. The X1 uses 20 inch wheels with 4.0 inch tires for exactly that reason.

Brakes, drivetrain and the rest

Brakes. A loaded e-bike can easily weigh 100 kg with a rider on it, and it gets to 32 km/h without you working for it. Mechanical disc brakes front and rear are the sensible minimum, and they have the advantage of being adjustable with a hex key at the side of the road. Hydraulic discs give a lighter lever feel and more stopping power, and they need bleeding occasionally. Rim brakes on an e-bike are a compromise you should not accept.

Drivetrain. A 7 or 8 speed derailleur with Shimano parts is the common setup, and there is a good reason for it. Every bike shop in the country stocks those parts and every mechanic can adjust one. Exotic drivetrains look impressive and are harder to get fixed in a small town.

Suspension. A front suspension fork takes the edge off potholes. A lockout lets you stiffen it for smooth pavement so you are not pumping energy into the fork. Full suspension belongs on mountain bikes and adds weight and cost everywhere else. Fat tires at low pressure do a surprising amount of suspension work on their own.

Display and lights. An LCD display that shows speed, assist level and battery state is standard. Integrated lights that run off the main battery are better than clip-on lights you forget to charge.

What you get at each price point in Canada

Price What to expect
Under $1,000 Usually a small battery, unbranded electronics, and no parts supply behind it. These are the bikes that get abandoned in garages when the battery dies and nobody can source another. Buy one only with your eyes open.
$1,500 to $2,500 The sensible band for most Canadian buyers. A 500 W rear hub motor, a battery in the 600 to 1,000 Wh range, disc brakes, a Shimano drivetrain, and a seller who can still sell you a spare pack in two years.
$2,500 to $4,500 Torque sensing, better suspension, name brand motors and batteries, and dealer service networks.
Above $4,500 Premium mid-drive systems, integrated batteries, and full suspension. Real engineering, and a good deal of it is paying for the badge.

The single biggest mistake in the cheap end of the market is buying an e-bike as a sealed appliance. A bicycle you can fix lasts twenty years. A bicycle you cannot get a battery for lasts until the battery dies.

Questions worth asking any seller

  • Can I buy a replacement battery and charger from you in two years, and what do they cost today?
  • What is the warranty on the frame, the motor and the battery, and who handles a claim?
  • Is the wattage figure nominal or peak?
  • How many watt-hours is the battery?
  • Where does the bike ship from, and does it arrive assembled?
  • Who fixes it if something goes wrong, and where do parts come from?

A seller who answers those six questions plainly is a seller worth buying from, whoever they are.
