Winter Riding in Canada

You can ride an e-bike all winter in Canada, and thousands of people do. Two things change. First, plan on noticeably less range once it is below freezing, and closer to half of your summer distance on a genuinely cold day. Second, and this is the rule that actually matters, never charge a battery that is below 0 °C. Bring the pack indoors, let it warm up, then plug it in. Get those two right and winter is mostly a question of tire pressure and dressing properly.

What the cold does to a battery

Lithium-ion cells work by moving ions through a liquid electrolyte. Cold makes that liquid thicker and the chemistry sluggish, so the pack cannot deliver current as freely. You see it three ways on the bike:

  • Less range. The energy is still in there, but the pack cannot give all of it up while it is cold.
  • Voltage sag. Ask for full power on a cold pack and the voltage drops further than it would in July, so the bike feels a bit flatter off the line.
  • A gauge that lies. Battery meters read voltage. Cold voltage looks low, so the gauge can show you less than you have, then jump back up when the pack warms.

The important part: this is usually temporary. A cold pack is not a damaged pack. Bring it inside, let it come up to room temperature, and the capacity comes back. What does permanent damage is charging it while it is frozen.

The one rule that kills batteries

Charging a lithium cell below freezing causes lithium plating, where metal builds up on the anode instead of the ions going where they should. That is not reversible. It permanently reduces capacity and, over time, it creates an internal short circuit risk. A good battery management system will refuse to charge a cold pack, but you should never rely on that.

Come in from a winter ride, take the pack off the bike, carry it inside, and let it sit for an hour or two before you plug it in. That single habit is the difference between a battery that lasts five years and one that lasts two.

Discharging in the cold, meaning simply riding, is fine. It is only charging that does the harm.

Winter battery routine

  • Store the pack indoors, always. Not in an unheated garage, not in a shed, not on the bike overnight at minus 20.
  • Fit it just before you leave. A pack that starts the ride at room temperature gives you meaningfully more range than one that started at minus 15, because it takes a while for the cold to get to the middle of it.
  • Warm before charging. An hour or two indoors, longer if the pack is properly frozen.
  • A neoprene or insulated cover over the pack helps it hold its own heat on a long cold ride.
  • Plan the ride around the smaller number. If you normally get 60 km, plan a 30 km day and be pleasantly surprised. Being stranded at minus 20 with a dead battery is a different problem than being stranded in June. A second pack carried warm inside a bag is the reliable answer for long winter rides.

Riding on packed snow

Fat tires are genuinely good at this, which is why they exist. The technique is not complicated, but it is different from summer riding.

  • Drop the pressure. Low pressure is what makes a 4 inch tire float on packed snow instead of cutting through it. Stay inside the range on the sidewall. Why this works is explained in fat tire vs regular e-bike.
  • Be gentle with the throttle. A 500 W rear hub motor can break the back wheel loose on snow easily. Feed the power in rather than grabbing it, especially in a corner or pulling away from a stop.
  • Brake early, gently, and in a straight line. Stopping distances on snow are far longer, and a locked front wheel on ice puts you down instantly. Ease onto both levers.
  • Let the bike wander. In ruts and soft edges the front end will move around under you. Keep your grip loose, look where you want to go, and stay off the front brake.
  • Sit down and stay back on climbs so the rear tire keeps its weight and its grip.
  • Treat ice as a stop sign. No tire, at any pressure, grips clear ice. Studded tires are made in 20 × 4.0 and are the only real answer if your route regularly ices over. Everything else is optimism.

Snow is not one surface. Packed and groomed is excellent riding. Fresh powder over ice, wet slush, and refrozen tire ruts are all much harder, and there is no shame in walking a bad hundred metres.

Salt, water and what actually rusts

Road salt is harder on a bicycle than the cold is. After a salty ride, a few minutes of care pays for itself:

  • Rinse the salt off with lukewarm water, never a pressure washer, which drives water into bearings and hub seals.
  • Dry the chain and re-lube it with a wet-weather lubricant. A rusted chain and cassette is the most common winter repair bill there is.
  • Wipe the disc rotors dry and keep all lubricant well away from them.
  • Dry the electrical connectors at the battery mount, the display and the motor cable, and keep them free of packed slush and salt.
  • Check the brakes before you set off. Hydraulic disc brakes have no cables to freeze, but a rotor caked in frozen slush still needs a few gentle stops at walking pace to clear it, and cold fluid can make the lever feel firmer than usual for the first minute. Test both brakes before you rely on them.
  • Store the bike somewhere it can drip and dry, not somewhere it stays wet.

Being seen, and staying warm

Canadian winter afternoons go dark early, and a snowbank at the roadside pushes you further into traffic than in summer. Run lights front and rear whether or not you think you need them, and put reflective material on the moving parts, ankles and pedals, because drivers pick up movement long before they pick up shapes.

For clothing, the things that end a winter ride early are hands, feet and face, not your body. Pedalling keeps your core warm faster than you expect, so dress the extremities properly and layer lightly everywhere else. Something over your face at minus 15 with a 25 km/h wind is not optional. Clear or yellow glasses keep your eyes working in blowing snow.

Remember that an e-bike makes wind chill worse than a regular bike does, because you are travelling faster while working less hard.

Should you ride at all today?

Freezing rain, glare ice, deep unploughed snow and heavy blowing snow are all days to leave the bike. The honest answer for most Canadian riders is that winter riding is excellent perhaps two-thirds of the time and miserable or unsafe the rest, and knowing which day is which is most of the skill.
